First seen Jun 18, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at whether using a virtual reality headset to watch a video of the surgical journey before foot surgery could lower anxiety. The idea was that knowing what to expect might help patients feel less worried. The study was terminated early and included only 19 adults scheduled for outpatient foot surgery under regional anesthesia.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to help patients feel less anxious before surgery.
What could go wrong
The trial was terminated early and had only 19 participants, so results are very limited and may not be reliable. VR may not reduce anxiety for everyone.
