A picture of your arteries could be worth a thousand prescriptions

NCT ID NCT01849575

First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether showing people images of their own carotid arteries (the main arteries in the neck) can improve how they and their doctors manage heart disease risk. Participants are adults aged 40, 50, or 60 who are already part of a health program in Sweden. Some receive standard care, while others also get a color-coded picture of their artery health and a follow-up call. The goal is to see if this visual information leads to better risk factor control and fewer heart problems over time.

What this could lead to

If it works, this approach could help people understand their heart disease risk better and motivate them to make healthier choices, potentially reducing heart attacks and strokes.

What could go wrong

This is a behavioral intervention, so results depend on whether people actually change their habits. The effect may vary widely between individuals, and long-term benefits are not guaranteed.
