New combo aims to crush 'Bad' cholesterol particle that other drugs miss

NCT ID NCT06496243

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This 16-week study tests whether a daily pill (obicetrapib) plus a twice-monthly shot (evolocumab, sold as Repatha) can lower a fatty particle called lipoprotein(a) that raises heart disease risk. About 69 adults with mildly high cholesterol and elevated Lp(a) will take the pill alone for 8 weeks, then add the shot for another 8 weeks. The goal is to see if the combination works better than the pill alone.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a new combination treatment to lower Lp(a), a stubborn risk factor for heart disease.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 69 people and no placebo group. Results may not hold up in larger trials, and the long-term benefits or risks are unknown.
