New video technique may help preemies breathe easier

NCT ID NCT07426016

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether using a video camera (video laryngoscopy) helps doctors give surfactant—a medicine that helps lungs work—to very premature babies more successfully on the first try compared to the standard direct-look method. About 100 babies born at 28 weeks or earlier will take part. The goal is to see which approach causes fewer breathing or heart rate problems during the procedure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

surfactant

What this could lead to

If video laryngoscopy works better, it could make a common procedure for premature babies safer and more successful on the first try.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 100 babies, so results may not apply to all preemies. The procedure itself carries risks like low oxygen or slow heart rate.
