Which route to the vein works best for varicocele repair?

NCT ID NCT07764900

First seen Aug 14, 2026 ยท Last updated Aug 14, 2026

Summary

This trial is testing two different ways to perform varicocele embolization, a procedure that blocks off enlarged veins in the scrotum to relieve pain and improve fertility. Thirty men with varicocele will receive the procedure either through a vein in the neck (transjugular) or through a vein in the groin (transfemoral), depending on their anatomy. The study will compare how well each approach reduces pain and improves symptoms at one and three months after the procedure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Percutaneous varicocele embolization using N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) glue, performed via either a transjugular or transfemoral approach.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors choose the best vein-access route for varicocele embolization, potentially improving pain relief and fertility outcomes with fewer complications.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 30 patients, so results may not apply to everyone. The procedure carries risks like bleeding, infection, or glue migration, and the best approach may depend on individual anatomy.
