Can a simple hormone pill help prevent early delivery?
NCT ID NCT07523295
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether giving vaginal progesterone to women who have had preterm labor can help them stay pregnant longer and improve their baby's health. Sixty pregnant women between 24 and 34 weeks will first receive standard care to stop labor, then half will get daily progesterone while the other half gets routine advice. Researchers will track how long until delivery, rates of preterm birth, and birth weight.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Progesterone vaginal capsules (400 mg daily)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could provide a simple way to reduce preterm births and improve newborn health in women who have had preterm labor.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply widely. Progesterone may not significantly extend pregnancy or prevent complications.
