New study tests Uterus-Saving approach for dangerous pregnancy condition

NCT ID NCT06512181

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This pilot study tests a conservative management strategy for placenta accreta, a serious pregnancy complication where the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall. Instead of the standard treatment—a hysterectomy (removing the uterus) after a C-section—doctors will leave the placenta in place and monitor the patient closely. The goal is to see if this approach can safely preserve the uterus in 15 women who want to avoid hysterectomy.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Conservative management (leaving the placenta in place after delivery)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could offer a safer alternative to hysterectomy for some women with placenta accreta, allowing them to keep their uterus.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study (15 people) with no comparison group. The approach may still lead to serious complications like infection or bleeding, and may not work for everyone.
