Mind over medicine: expectations may shape antidepressant withdrawal

NCT ID NCT05191277

First seen May 19, 2026 · Last updated Jun 15, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study looked at why some people have trouble stopping antidepressants. Researchers wanted to see if a person's expectations about stopping the drug play a role, separate from the drug's physical effects. 56 adults who were already doing well on antidepressants were randomly assigned to either stop or continue their medication, and some were told exactly what they were getting while others were not. The goal was to measure how severe any discontinuation symptoms were and how expectations influenced them.
