New stent technique aims to prevent deadly bleeding in liver disease patients

NCT ID NCT07587671

First seen May 19, 2026 · Last updated May 19, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a new way to use a stent (a small tube) in the liver to lower blood pressure and prevent dangerous bleeding from enlarged veins in people with cirrhosis. The new method uses a smaller balloon to open the stent, which may reduce side effects like confusion. About 240 adults who have recovered from a first bleeding episode will be randomly assigned to get either this new stent procedure or standard care (banding plus medication). The main goal is to see if the new approach reduces the chance of death or repeat bleeding within one year.
