Ultrasound could help women avoid unnecessary repeat C-Sections
NCT ID NCT01916044
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study looked at whether an ultrasound measurement of the lower uterine segment can predict the risk of uterine rupture in pregnant women who have had a previous C-section. Over 2,900 women were enrolled to see if using this measurement alongside a decision rule could reduce complications for both mother and baby. The goal is to help more women safely attempt vaginal birth after a C-section.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ultrasound measurement of the lower uterine segment
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give doctors a reliable way to predict uterine rupture risk, helping more women safely attempt vaginal birth after a C-section and reducing unnecessary repeat C-sections.
What could go wrong
This is a completed trial, but the ultrasound method may not be accurate enough in practice, and results may not apply to all women with a prior C-section.
