Chocolate power: could a sweet treat speed up labor?
NCT ID NCT07375836
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether eating 50 grams of milk chocolate during labor can shorten the second stage (pushing). Researchers will compare 180 healthy pregnant women who eat the chocolate to those who do not. The goal is to see if a simple energy boost can make labor faster and safer.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
milk chocolate (50 grams, 25-30% cocoa)
What this could lead to
If it works, eating chocolate during labor could be a simple, pleasant way to shorten the pushing stage and reduce the need for medical interventions.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial. The effect may be small or nonexistent, and chocolate might cause nausea or heartburn in some women.
