New combo test aims to spot tough airways before surgery
NCT ID NCT07642206
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study will test whether combining an ultrasound measurement of the neck with a simple lip bite test can predict difficult airway in 134 obese adults undergoing surgery. Participants will have their hyomental distance measured in different head positions and perform the upper lip bite test. The goal is to see if this combo is more accurate than standard methods at identifying patients who may be hard to intubate.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give doctors a simple, non-invasive way to predict difficult airways in obese patients, improving safety during anesthesia.
What could go wrong
This is a small observational study, not a treatment trial. The test may not be accurate enough in practice, and results may not apply to all patients or settings.
