Nerve block may ease rib fracture pain and cut opioid use
NCT ID NCT06299137
First seen Feb 21, 2026 · Last updated May 19, 2026 · Updated 13 times
Summary
This study tested whether a numbing injection near the chest wall (serratus anterior plane block) can improve pain, breathing, and coughing in emergency room patients with broken ribs. Forty adults with rib fractures received either the injection or standard care. Researchers measured pain and lung function over five hours and tracked opioid use for 24 hours to see if the block reduces the need for strong painkillers.
