Sound waves used to open Brain's protective barrier for cancer treatment

NCT ID NCT03714243

Summary

This small study tested whether using focused ultrasound to temporarily open the blood-brain barrier is safe and possible. The barrier normally protects the brain but can block cancer drugs. Eight patients with breast cancer that had spread to the brain received the ultrasound treatment up to six times. Researchers monitored for side effects and checked if the barrier opened successfully using MRI scans.
