Can a tiny amount of dye protect kidneys during heart scans?
NCT ID NCT05906758
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether using very little contrast dye (less than 20cc) during coronary angiography is safer for patients who already have acute kidney injury. Researchers will compare immediate angiography with delayed angiography to see if ultra-low contrast reduces the risk of further kidney damage. The trial involves 32 hospitalized adults who need this heart procedure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ultra-low contrast coronary angiography (procedure using less than 20cc of contrast material)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that using very little contrast dye during heart imaging is safer for patients with kidney injury, potentially reducing the need for dialysis.
What could go wrong
This is a small early-phase trial with only 32 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The ultra-low contrast approach might not provide clear enough images for diagnosis.
