First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether trained peer navigators, connecting with students through a mobile health app, can increase the use of HIV prevention pills (PrEP) and contraception among sexually active female university students aged 18-24 in Zambia. 324 participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the peer navigator support or standard care. The goal is to see if this approach helps more young women protect themselves from HIV and unintended pregnancy.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that peer support via mobile phones is an effective way to help young women in Zambia prevent HIV and unplanned pregnancy.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small study (324 participants) and relies on self-reported data, so results may not apply to all settings. The intervention is behavioral, so its impact may vary.
