New ultrasound aims to spot twin pregnancy complications before they start
NCT ID NCT07667647
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study will test a new, high-speed ultrasound device on 10 healthy women pregnant with identical twins who share a placenta. The goal is to see if the device can take detailed pictures of the tiny blood vessels in the placenta. This information could help doctors better understand and eventually predict twin-twin transfusion syndrome, a serious condition where blood flow between twins becomes uneven.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Verasonics Vantage 256 ultrasound device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to better ways to detect and understand twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) early, potentially improving outcomes for at-risk pregnancies.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early feasibility study with only 10 participants. It is not designed to prove the device improves health outcomes, only that it can take detailed images.
