Robotic surgery through the mouth could eliminate neck scars in thyroid cancer patients
NCT ID NCT06958601
First seen Jul 09, 2026 · Last updated Jul 10, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial compares a new robotic surgery that removes the thyroid through the mouth (transoral vestibular approach) to the standard open surgery with a neck incision. The study includes 430 adults aged 18–65 with papillary thyroid cancer. The goal is to see if the robotic method is as safe and effective as open surgery, while offering better cosmetic results and shorter hospital stays. The robotic approach is being tested mainly for tumors smaller than 2 cm.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Transoral robotic thyroidectomy (surgical procedure)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this approach could offer a safe, scarless alternative to traditional open thyroidectomy for small thyroid cancers, reducing hospital stays and improving cosmetic results.
- What could go wrong
- This is a single-center trial, and the robotic method may not be suitable for tumors larger than 2 cm. As with any surgery, risks include nerve damage, bleeding, and infection.
