Can a numbing cream make labor induction less painful?

NCT ID NCT07288021

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether applying a numbing cream (lidocaine-prilocaine) to the vaginal area before inserting a balloon catheter for labor induction reduces pain. About 200 pregnant women, both first-time and experienced mothers, will be randomly assigned to receive either the numbing cream or a placebo. Researchers will measure pain levels during insertion and overall satisfaction.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Lidocaine-prilocaine cream (EMLA)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple way to reduce pain during labor induction without strong medications.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial, so results may not apply to all women. The cream may not reduce pain significantly, and some may have skin reactions.
