Arthritis drug shows promise for rare, Life-Threatening skin conditions
NCT ID NCT06474078
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tested the drug tofacitinib (XELJANZ) in 20 adults with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), rare and severe skin reactions often caused by medications. The main goal was to see how quickly the skin healed completely. Researchers also tracked deaths, hospital stay length, side effects, and eye complications. The study was small and had no placebo group, so results are preliminary.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
tofacitinib (XELJANZ)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a faster skin-healing treatment for severe drug reactions like SJS/TEN.
What could go wrong
This was a very small pilot study with only 20 people and no comparison group, so results may not apply broadly. Tofacitinib can increase infection risk.
