Magnetic pulses to the brain may help the blind see again
NCT ID NCT07425717
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This clinical trial tests whether transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can restore vision in adults with severe retinal degeneration. Over 100 participants will receive either real TMS or a sham (fake) treatment for five days, and their eyesight will be checked up to a year later. The goal is to see if this non-invasive brain stimulation can improve visual function safely.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a non-invasive treatment to improve vision in people with severe retinal degeneration.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with only 136 participants, and the treatment is very short (5 days). It may not produce lasting or meaningful vision improvement, and the sham group helps control for placebo effects.
