Could a quick blood thinner before stroke surgery boost recovery?
NCT ID NCT07135089
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving the blood-thinning drug tirofiban before a clot-removal procedure helps people recover better after a stroke caused by a blocked artery. About 870 adults with a large-vessel stroke will receive either tirofiban or a placebo before the procedure. The main goal is to see if more people can live independently 90 days later.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- tirofiban (a blood-thinning drug given intravenously)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could provide a new way to reduce disability after stroke by giving a clot-preventing drug right before the clot-removal procedure.
- What could go wrong
- This is a large phase 3 trial, but it is still testing an unproven approach. The drug may increase bleeding risk, and the benefit may be small or not apply to all stroke patients.
