Could a new pill beat the standard for gout? large trial underway
NCT ID NCT07414394
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This Phase 3 trial tests whether a new drug, tigulixostat, is better than the standard gout medication febuxostat at lowering uric acid levels in Chinese adults with gout. About 600 participants will take one of the two drugs for 24 weeks, then switch to tigulixostat for another 28 weeks. The study tracks uric acid levels, gout attacks, kidney function, and quality of life over a year.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
tigulixostat (also called IBI128) and febuxostat
What this could lead to
If tigulixostat works better than febuxostat, it could offer a new, more effective option for controlling gout by lowering uric acid levels.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 3 trial, but it only includes Chinese adults, so results may not apply to other groups. Gout is a chronic condition, so this treatment aims to control it, not cure it.
