Laser zaps leg artery blockages in new trial
NCT ID NCT05916950
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing a new laser device called the Thor system to treat blockages in the leg arteries caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD). About 155 adults with PAD will receive the laser treatment and be followed for a year. The main goals are to see if the device is safe and if it successfully opens the blocked arteries.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Thor laser atherectomy system (a device that uses laser energy to remove calcium blockages in leg arteries)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a new, less invasive way to treat blocked leg arteries in people with peripheral artery disease, potentially improving blood flow and reducing symptoms.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage study with only 155 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Risks include artery damage, bleeding, or the blockage returning.
