Simple eye test could predict nerve damage in dry eye sufferers

NCT ID NCT06482164

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This completed study looked at 31 people with dry eye to see if measuring corneal sensitivity (how well the eye feels touch) can detect early-stage neurotrophic keratopathy, a condition where the cornea loses sensation. Researchers aimed to find out which dry eye patients might later need special treatment. The study was purely observational and did not test any new drug or therapy.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help identify dry eye patients at risk for neurotrophic keratopathy earlier, potentially guiding future treatment decisions.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed observational study (31 people) that only measures a symptom, not a treatment. Results may not apply to all dry eye patients.
