Text message nudge could save thousands from pneumonia
NCT ID NCT07659470
First seen Jun 23, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a simple WhatsApp message reminding people turning 65 in Chile to get their free pneumococcal vaccine can increase vaccination rates. Over 43,000 adults will be randomly assigned to receive the reminder or not, and researchers will track who gets vaccinated within 42 days. If successful, this low-cost approach could be used to boost vaccine coverage in other populations.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
WhatsApp text message reminder
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that simple text reminders are a cheap, effective way to get more older adults vaccinated against pneumonia.
What could go wrong
This is a behavioral study, not a drug trial. The effect may be small, and results from Chile may not apply to other countries or age groups.
