Texting your way to quit: new study targets rural tobacco use
NCT ID NCT07431619
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether daily motivational text messages can help people in rural Mississippi quit smoking or smokeless tobacco. Researchers will recruit 150 tobacco users who want to quit and have tried before. Half will get encouraging texts, the other half non-specific messages, and all will report their progress for 6 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
motivational text messaging
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to help rural tobacco users quit, reducing health disparities.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 150 participants. The intervention is just text messages, and success depends on self-reported quitting, which may not be accurate.
