New Clot-Buster shows promise for Tough-to-Treat strokes
NCT ID NCT06196320
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This phase 3 trial tested a drug called tenecteplase in 452 people with a severe type of stroke caused by a blockage in the basilar artery at the back of the brain. Participants received either tenecteplase or the current best treatment (which could include another clot-buster or standard care) within 24 hours of symptoms. The main goal was to see if tenecteplase helps more people recover with little or no disability after 3 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Tenecteplase (a clot-busting drug given intravenously)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a more effective and convenient treatment for severe strokes in the back of the brain, potentially reducing long-term disability.
- What could go wrong
- This is a completed phase 3 trial, but results are not yet published. The drug may not prove superior to current best practice, and there is a risk of bleeding, a known side effect of clot-busting drugs.
