Wearable tech could spot Post-Surgery problems early
NCT ID NCT04596384
First seen Aug 20, 2026 · Last updated Aug 21, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether a home-based telemonitoring program, which tracks symptoms and daily steps using a wearable device and app, can improve recovery and reduce complications within 30 days after abdominal surgery for gastrointestinal, genitourinary, or gynecologic cancers. Participants are randomly assigned to either the telemonitoring program or standard surgeon-only care. The study measures changes in daily step count, post-operative complications, and time to hospital readmission to see if early detection of problems can lead to better outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Home-based telemonitoring program using a wearable activity tracker and symptom reporting app
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this approach could help doctors detect and treat post-surgery problems early, improving recovery and reducing complications for cancer patients.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is early and may not show a clear benefit. Patients may find the technology burdensome, and results may not apply to all types of surgery or patients.
