Summary

This study tests whether a telehealth version of BASICS, a proven program for reducing heavy drinking, works as well as the in-person version. Researchers will enroll 600 college students aged 18-26 who binge drink. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive BASICS in person, via Zoom, or an online self-guided program. Alcohol use and related problems will be tracked for 12 months.

Active substance
Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) delivered via telehealth
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide an effective, scalable way to reduce binge drinking and its consequences among college students.
What could go wrong
This is a behavioral intervention trial with no blinding, so results may be influenced by participant expectations. The control group also receives an online program, which may limit the observed difference.
