Virtual therapy aims to lift depression and restore safety for abused seniors

NCT ID NCT06039930

First seen Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Jul 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests whether a video-delivered therapy called Tele-PROTECT can reduce depression and increase feelings of safety and empowerment in older adults who have experienced elder abuse. Around 140 English- and Spanish-speaking participants aged 60 and older will receive either Tele-PROTECT or a depression education program over nine virtual sessions. Researchers will measure changes in depression severity and safety-related empowerment to see if Tele-PROTECT offers meaningful benefits beyond education and support alone.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
a behavioral intervention called Tele-PROTECT, delivered via video sessions
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer an effective, accessible therapy for depressed older adults facing abuse, helping them feel safer and more in control.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial (140 participants) comparing two active interventions, so any benefit over the control may be modest. Results may not apply to those who don't speak English or Spanish or have more severe mental health conditions.
