Shock wave device aims to smash heart artery calcium
NCT ID NCT06885177
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a new device that uses shock waves to break up calcium deposits in heart arteries before placing a stent. About 335 adults with coronary artery disease will receive this treatment at up to 55 US sites. The goal is to see if the device helps stents work better and reduces complications like heart attack or repeat procedures within 30 days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Coronary Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) System
What this could lead to
If successful, this device could offer a safer, more effective way to treat heavily calcified coronary arteries, potentially reducing the need for repeat procedures and improving outcomes for patients with complex heart disease.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with no control group, so results may not be definitive. The device may not work as well in all patients, and risks include heart attack, need for repeat procedures, or other complications.
