Scientists test Lab-Made corneal implants to restore sight
NCT ID NCT04319848
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This early-stage trial tests a new type of corneal graft made from lab-grown human cells. It is for people with mild to moderate corneal damage from conditions like Fuchs' dystrophy or after eye surgery. The goal is to see if the graft is safe and can improve vision. 30 participants are being enrolled in Singapore.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
tissue-engineered corneal endothelial graft
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a new treatment option for corneal damage using lab-grown cells, potentially reducing the need for donor corneas.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 1 trial with only 30 participants, so safety and effectiveness are not yet proven. The graft may not work as expected or could cause complications.
