New TB drug cocktails aim to cut treatment time in half
NCT ID NCT05971602
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This clinical trial tested whether combining several drugs—bedaquiline, OPC-167832, sutezolid, and either pretomanid or delamanid—could treat pulmonary tuberculosis in just 2 to 4 months instead of the standard 6 months. The study enrolled 93 adults with drug-sensitive or drug-resistant TB. Unfortunately, the trial was terminated early, so we have limited data on how well these shorter regimens work.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Combination of bedaquiline, OPC-167832, sutezolid, and either pretomanid or delamanid
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward shorter, simpler treatment regimens for tuberculosis, reducing the time patients need to take medication.
What could go wrong
The trial was terminated early, so results are limited. It was a phase 2 study with only 93 participants, meaning it is too early to know if these combinations are safe and effective for widespread use.
