New catheter lock solution could cut ICU infections
NCT ID NCT07366372
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a taurolidine-based lock solution can prevent infections in central venous catheters used in intensive care. 120 ICU patients received either the taurolidine solution, a tigecycline-heparin mix, or plain saline to lock their catheters. The goal was to see which approach best reduced bacterial growth and bloodstream infections.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
taurolidine-citrate-heparin lock solution
What this could lead to
If effective, this could provide a simple way to reduce dangerous catheter infections in ICU patients, potentially saving lives and shortening hospital stays.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with 120 participants, so results may not apply to all ICU settings. The intervention also includes heparin and citrate, which carry bleeding or allergy risks.
