New PET tracer aims to spot Alzheimer's tau tangles more clearly
NCT ID NCT07306598
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a new radioactive tracer called [18F]NIDF that binds to tau tangles in the brain, which are linked to Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. Researchers will give the tracer to 20 healthy volunteers and patients, then use PET scans to see how well it highlights tau buildup. The main goals are to check safety and see if the tracer can improve diagnosis compared to existing methods.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
[18F]NIDF (a radioactive tracer for PET imaging)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a more accurate way to diagnose Alzheimer's and other tau-related brain diseases using PET scans.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small study (20 participants) focused on safety and imaging quality, not treatment. The tracer may not prove better than existing methods.
