Tart cherry juice tested to stop Post-Surgery heart flutter

NCT ID NCT03793465

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This pilot study tests whether drinking tart cherry concentrate for three days before heart valve surgery can reduce the risk of post-operative atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat). The study involves 50 adults aged 50-79 who are in normal heart rhythm before surgery. Researchers will also measure inflammation-related gene activity in heart tissue to understand how the supplement might work.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

tart cherry concentrate

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple dietary supplement to help prevent heart rhythm problems after cardiac surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a very small early-phase pilot study, so results may not be conclusive. The supplement may cause digestive discomfort and might not reduce atrial fibrillation at all.
