New hope for moms with hepatitis b: drug may stop baby from getting the virus
NCT ID NCT05853718
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing a drug called TAF (tenofovir alafenamide) in pregnant women with chronic hepatitis B. The goal is to see if taking TAF daily from week 28-32 of pregnancy until delivery can prevent the baby from catching the virus. Researchers will also check how the drug moves through the mother's body and look for any safety issues in both mother and child. About 50 women aged 20-40 with high virus levels are being recruited.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) tablets
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that TAF is a safe and effective option to prevent passing hepatitis B from mother to baby during childbirth.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center phase 4 study with only 50 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Risks include unknown effects on the infant and potential side effects from the drug.
