Could stem cell vesicles treat spinal cord cavities?

NCT ID NCT07295067

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This early-stage trial tests whether injections of tiny particles from umbilical cord stem cells are safe for people with syringomyelia, a condition where fluid-filled cavities form in the spinal cord. The study will enroll 18 adults whose symptoms haven't improved after surgery or natural shrinkage of the cavity. Participants receive three monthly injections into the spinal fluid, and researchers will monitor for side effects and any changes in spinal cord function.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

extracellular vesicles from human umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells

What this could lead to

If safe and effective, this could point toward a new treatment option for syringomyelia that may improve spinal cord function.

What could go wrong

This is a very early Phase 1 trial with only 18 participants, focused on safety. It may not show clear benefit, and there are risks of serious side effects from the injections.
