Switching ventilation methods may help wean patients off breathing machines

NCT ID NCT02921347

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether switching between invasive (tube in the throat) and noninvasive (mask) ventilation could help patients who have been on a ventilator for 14 days or more to wean off it. The trial planned to enroll 83 adults but was terminated early, so the results are limited. The goal was to reduce the number of days on a ventilator and improve weaning success rates.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

switching between invasive and noninvasive ventilation

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could help patients who struggle to come off a ventilator breathe on their own sooner, reducing time in the ICU.

What could go wrong

The trial was terminated early, so we don't have enough data to know if it works. The approach may not be safe or effective for all difficult-weaning patients.
