Early tracheotomy may speed ventilator weaning, study finds
NCT ID NCT02921334
First seen Mar 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 13, 2026 · Updated 12 times
Summary
This study looked at whether doing a tracheotomy early (after 5-7 days on a breathing machine) helps patients switch between invasive and noninvasive ventilation and wean off the machine faster. The trial planned to enroll 200 adults who were expected to have difficulty weaning, but it was terminated early. Key measures included how many days patients needed the ventilator, success rates, and length of ICU and hospital stays.
