Genetic test could tailor blood thinners after stents, reducing bleeding risk
NCT ID NCT06588595
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a genetic score (ABCD-GENE) can help doctors choose the right blood thinner for patients after a heart stent. Currently, patients take two blood thinners for months. The score would guide whether to switch to a milder drug or drop one of the two. The trial involves 90 adults who have had a stent and are on standard dual therapy. Researchers will measure how well the blood is thinned, aiming to find a safer, personalized approach.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Prasugrel, Ticagrelor, Clopidogrel, Aspirin
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that using a genetic test to choose blood thinners after a heart stent is safer and just as effective as the standard one-size-fits-all approach.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study (90 people) that only measures blood reactivity, not actual heart attacks or strokes. The genetic score may not work as well in real-world, diverse populations.
