New therapies aim to help dementia patients swallow safely

NCT ID NCT03682081

Summary

This study tested two simple treatments to help people with Alzheimer's or other dementias swallow more safely. Researchers wanted to see if tongue-strengthening exercises or a saliva-moistening gel could reduce choking risk and prevent pneumonia. The study involved 76 patient-caregiver pairs who tried these approaches alongside usual care for 8 weeks.
