Blood test may spare ER patients from unneeded scans for clots

NCT ID NCT07671300

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

Superficial vein thrombosis (SVT) is a painful but usually harmless blood clot just under the skin. However, about 4% of people develop more serious clots in deep veins or lungs. Current guidelines recommend ultrasound scans to decide if blood thinners are needed, but scans are often only available during the day, leading to multiple ER visits and long waits. This study will review the records of 400 ER patients tested for SVT to see if a simple D-dimer blood test could safely reduce the need for scans. The goal is to gather information for future research.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test that reduces the need for ultrasound scans in emergency patients with superficial vein thrombosis.

What could go wrong

This is an early exploratory study that only reviews medical records, not a treatment trial. The D-dimer test may not prove accurate enough to replace scans.
