Food as medicine: study tests grocery vouchers for High-Risk patients
NCT ID NCT06589336
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether giving Medicaid patients with stage 2 cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome (CKMS) access to healthy food through Instacart vouchers and food banks, plus nutrition counseling, is practical and engaging. Over 24 weeks, researchers measured how many people signed up, stuck with the program, and used the services. The goal was to see if this approach could improve nutrition security and health behaviors in a low-income population.

What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could show a practical way to improve nutrition and health in low-income people with heart, kidney, and metabolic conditions.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed feasibility study, so it cannot prove long-term health benefits. Results may not apply to people without internet access or in other regions.
