New method aims to help premature babies breathe easier without a breathing tube
NCT ID NCT07176117
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether giving surfactant (a natural substance that helps lungs stay open) through a small airway device placed above the vocal cords, along with standard breathing support (CPAP), is better than CPAP alone for late preterm and early term infants with respiratory distress. About 422 newborns will be enrolled. The goal is to see if this less invasive approach reduces complications and hospital stays.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
surfactant
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a safer, less invasive way to treat breathing problems in newborns, potentially reducing complications and hospital stays.
What could go wrong
This is a single-center study, and results may not apply to all hospitals. The procedure still carries risks like any airway device, and the benefit over standard CPAP alone is not yet proven.
