New nerve block could cut morphine use after hip surgery
NCT ID NCT06982625
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a nerve block called Supra-Inguinal Fascia Iliaca Block (SIFIB) can help patients who have severe pain after hip replacement surgery. The block is given only to those in significant pain, aiming to reduce morphine use and help them walk sooner. Researchers will enroll 310 patients and measure pain relief, morphine needs, and ability to walk.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
local anesthetic (ropivacaine)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could give doctors a reliable rescue option for severe pain after hip replacement, reducing morphine use and speeding up recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study testing a technique that hasn't been proven effective for all hip replacement patients. The nerve block may cause temporary muscle weakness, which could delay walking.
