Neck nerve block may boost recovery after thyroid surgery

NCT ID NCT06002152

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether a nerve block using bupivacaine (a numbing medicine) improves recovery after thyroid surgery. 160 adults were randomly assigned to receive either the nerve block or a placebo before surgery. The main goal was to see if the block led to a better quality of recovery on the first day after surgery, measured by a detailed questionnaire.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple way to improve comfort and recovery after thyroid surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study. The nerve block may not improve recovery more than placebo, and results may not apply to all patients.
