First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This pilot study tested whether adding structured supportive psychotherapy to the antipsychotic risperidone could improve cognitive function and reduce inflammation in 44 hospitalized adults with schizophrenia. Participants received either risperidone plus 12 weekly talk therapy sessions or risperidone plus unstructured conversation. The study measured changes in thinking skills and a blood marker of inflammation after 12 weeks.

structured supportive psychotherapy
What this could lead to
If this approach works, it could point toward a way to improve thinking skills and reduce inflammation in people with schizophrenia, alongside standard medication.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 44 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The trial was registered after completion, which can introduce bias.
