Body's own cells injected into knee tendon shows promise

NCT ID NCT04753853

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested an injection of stromal vascular fraction, a mixture of cells from the patient's own fat tissue, for patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee). Thirty participants received the injection under ultrasound guidance. The goal was to see if it could improve symptoms and function, measured by a questionnaire called VISA-P.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

stromal vascular fraction injection

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new treatment option for patellar tendinopathy that uses the body's own cells to help heal the tendon.

What could go wrong

This was a small, early study with only 30 participants and no comparison group. The results may not apply to everyone, and the procedure may not work better than existing treatments.
